Peer2Pickle asks individuals to creatively and collectively problem solve the situation of food waste. Through the exhibition's website the works available in the exhibition are disseminated as a series of formulas (see below), allowing any individuals with access to food waste the opportunity to transform it into goods with an extended shelf life as well as potential to become products with a new economy. Each formula includes a recipe on how biological matter, primarily produce, can be transformed though simple processes as well as an estimated sale value for the final product and the equation on how that value was reached. Peer2Pickle disseminates these formulas in order to incentivize the recovery and rejuvenation of waste destined for landfills; thereby spurring alternative economies, reanimating economic potential of discarded food items, reducing the inefficiency of the global food production system, redistributing wealth, negating the ecological impact of decomposing foods as well as reducing economic loss incurred through the premature disposal of food happening on farms, in supermarkets and in homes.
The equations associated with each formula have been based on small test batches for each. If the quantities of any of the formulas were to be scaled up, it would result in increased profit and reduced cost for the final products creating a much more sustainable economic model.
